At the Milwaukee Film Festival, creative Josh Evert represents a growing wave of artists who refuse to be boxed into a single role.
Audio producer. Filmmaker. Music collaborator.
For Evert, creativity is not a job title.
It is a lifestyle.
A Return to the Festival
Singing Never marks Evert’s second music video featured at the festival.
For him, the experience is more than just a screening.
It is a reunion.
A celebration of Milwaukee’s creative community, where artists, filmmakers, and musicians come together to support one another.
The Reality of Independent Music
Evert is direct about the challenges of today’s music industry.
For independent artists, music alone is no longer enough.
Visuals are essential.
Music videos, content, and storytelling have become necessary tools to capture attention in an oversaturated digital space.
Singing Never, created in collaboration with Kaylee Conway, reflects that reality.
The project was built organically, with a small team heading into the woods to create something raw and visually engaging.
A Lifelong Creative Instinct
For Evert, creativity did not begin with a career decision.
It has always been there.
From experimenting with tape recorders as a kid to filming school projects with handheld cameras, he has always been drawn to making things.
Even during a brief period working a traditional office job, the urge to create never disappeared.
Eventually, it pulled him back.
The Cream City Work Ethic
Being a creative in Milwaukee comes with its own set of challenges.
Unlike major cities like Chicago or Los Angeles, the infrastructure to support artists is limited.
That reality forces creatives to adapt.
They take on multiple roles.
They build their own opportunities.
They create without waiting for validation.
For Evert, that grind creates a deeper level of respect for artists who continue to push forward despite the obstacles.
Building Toward Something Bigger
Despite the challenges, Evert remains optimistic about the future of Milwaukee’s creative scene.
He believes it only takes a few artists breaking through on a national level to shift the entire ecosystem.
As more attention comes to the city, more opportunities will follow.
In the meantime, the work continues.
Evert is currently collaborating on multiple projects while preparing to release his own solo music.
The Work Never Stops
For Evert, there is no clear endpoint.
No moment where the grind suddenly becomes easy.
There is only the work.
Creating.
Collaborating.
Building.
And hoping that something resonates.
Because in a city where opportunities are limited, consistency becomes the most powerful tool an artist has.
And Josh Evert is still creating.
